The Building Department, within the Community Development Department, is responsible for enforcing the uniform building, electrical, mechanical and plumbing codes. The Department also works closely with the Fire Department in enforcing fire and life safety codes. Applications for new construction projects are reviewed and building permits are granted after a plan check is completed to determine compliance with building and zoning codes. Departmental staff is responsible for inspecting new construction and remodeling activities at various stages of building development to insure code compliance. The City, through this department, provides building code services contractually to the Cities of Mahtomedi and Birchwood Village. The Department is under the general direction of the Community Development Director.
