The White Bear Lake Area Community Counseling Center, known locally as the Community Counseling Center, opened its doors in 1971, with an initial mission to provide counseling services to juvenile offenders and their parents. This vital work continues today as the Youth Diversion Program, but the Center has added an array of services to better serve the needs of the community. The Community Counseling Center provides outpatient mental health services to young people, adults, and families in times of personal crisis. The Center is a state-certified mental health clinic that provides individual and family therapy to residents of White Bear Lake and four other supporting communities. The Center has two special programs for children with serious emotional disturbance. The Intensive Mental Health Program provides low-cost, convenient therapy to youth at risk of an out-of-home placement. The Family Community Support Services Program helps families with an emotionally disturbed child find resources to help improve the child's functioning at home, at school, and in the community. The Center offers a total of six different parenting classes, provided free of charge to residents of suburban Ramsey County and Mahtomedi, plus a drop-in parent support group. The Music Mentoring Program matches local youth with musicians willing to provide free music lessons. A Dental Brokering Program provides assistance to low-income families in finding free or low cost dental services for children. Center staff members also provide consultation services to the White Bear Lake Area Public Schools, and offer professional presentations on a variety of mental health, family, and wellness issues.
