Outpatient Mental Health Program

The Community Counseling Center offers the following mental health services: Diagnostic assessment, individual therapy, family therapy, group therapy, psychiatric evaluation, medication management (for Center therapy clients only), and crisis intervention (business hours only).  The Center provides therapy for most mental health concerns ranging from serious psychiatric disorders, such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, to family conflict and parenting problems.  Besides general therapy services, the current Center staff possess specialties in the following areas: Problems of the single parent and blended (step) family; marital therapy; family therapy; child and adolescent therapy; depression disorders; anxiety disorders; personality disorders; eating disorders (bulimia, anorexia, and compulsive overeating); juvenile offenders; Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD); problems of adult children of alcoholics; abuse issues (child abuse, incest, battering); stress management; grief resolution; and psychological problems related to physical problems (epilepsy, diabetes, etc.).

The Center provides mental health services to children, adolescents, and adults who are experiencing an emotional disturbance, mental illness, or social problem for which mental health services would be beneficial.  To be eligible for mental health services at the Center, the client must reside in one of the following cities: White Bear Lake, White Bear Township, Vadnais Heights, Mahtomedi, or Birchwood Village.

As a state-certified mental health clinic, the Center is able to accept reimbursement from many insurance companies.  A sliding fee schedule, for those without insurance, is available to residents of the above mentioned cities.

Intensive Mental Health Program

The Center also offers a special mental health program for children called the Intensive Mental Health Program.  This program was developed in partnership with the White Bear Lake Area School District and the Suburban Ramsey Family Collaborative.  Through this program the Center provides diagnostic assessments, individual therapy, family therapy, psychiatric assessments and medication management of children age 12 and older, referral and coordination of psychiatric assessment and medication management for children 11 and younger.  These services may be delivered in the home, in the school, at a mutually agreed upon community site, or in the offices at the Community Counseling Center.

To be eligible for this program clients must be students, age 4 through 17, who attend or reside in the White Bear Lake Area School District.  Other requirements include social, family, or economic barriers to receiving mental health care and/or diagnosis of an emotional disturbance that places the youth at risk of an out-of-home placement.

Because of the unique array of services available through this program, most insurance companies do not typically cover these services.  The majority of the funding for this program is provided by the Suburban Ramsey Family Collaborative.  This allows the Center to charge clients a very reasonable fee for services and to make this program available to many children and families who may not have been able to afford these services previously.

Family Community Support Services

The Center provides support services to a caseload of families, each of which has a seriously disturbed child in the home.  These services involve conducting functional assessments of the child, creating an intervention plan, finding suitable resources for the child and other family members, assisting the family in connecting with services and activities, and providing crisis intervention during business hours.

To be eligible for Family Community Support Services the child must be 17 years of age or younger, have a diagnosis of severe emotional disturbance, and live in Ramsey County.  There is no cost to the families involved in this program.  Primary funding for the program comes from the Ramsey County Children’s Mental Health Collaborative.
